The annual Titanic Commemoration in Cobh, organised by Cobh Tourism Ltd. saw a very large attendance in glorious sunshine this Sunday afternoon.

A large delegation from the parish of Adergoole in Mayo travelled to Cobh to remember the fourteen of their relatives that made the exact same journey ninety nine years ago to join the Titanic. Of the fourteen, eleven perished when the ship sank. The group were treated to a tour of the Queenstown Story in Cobh Heritage Centre and were fascinated by the new “Building the Titanic” Exhibition. They later played an active part in the Titanic commemoration ceremonies.

Of the 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh, 79 perished and over fifty schoolchildren from the Great Island read their names in John F. Kennedy Park.

The Mayor Finbarr O’Driscoll then placed a wreath in the sea in memory of all of those who died when the Titanic sank.

The ceremony concluded with a unique rendition of the Last Post and Reveille by Cobh Confraternity Band.
